Localization and orientation. statement of believe.
Bert Gstettner has expanded his artistic basis as a dancer and choreographer through self-study and after his studies in Paris and New York. After some of his own choreographies he was founding the production platform Tanz*Hotel in Vienna. As a label, Tanz*Hotel becomes his other artistic identity, which he often marks with the distinctive five-pointed star in the titles of the pieces as an element of energy and as a label logo in a graphic appearance.

He belongs to the second generation of pioneers of the dance scene in Vienna, which emerged in the 1980s in the context of the WUK initiatives. Through his commitment to dance politics in the IG Freie Theater, then with the symposia Tanz*Raum, the choreographers' initiative TQW and especially the founding of his own studios, he was able to set new strengthening impulses for the Viennese dance scene again and again. Bert Gstettner has successfully shaped the dance scene in Vienna and beyond for decades. He has prepared or influenced the successful careers of several younger artists, e.g. Chris Haring, Andrea Nagl, Michael Turinsky, Stephanie Cumming, Arne Mannott and others.

His company Tanz*Hotel, originally located in the old Hellerfabrik from 1992, stands for independent productions in the >dance of the present< and has had its workspaces and studios in Vienna II, Leopoldstadt since 2006.

Today, his intergenerational choreographies and initiatives give young people the opportunity to create artistically and to reinvent or redefine theatre, dance and performance. As a mentor to upcoming artists, he curates and accompanies them in their own projects in the Tanz*Hotel residency program Artist At Resort, which he founded and directed.

Bert Gstettner is still present as a performer and choreographer in his solo projects, such as most recently at end.less.bow, and always wants to raise new questions in his art.

Dance and Society
Contemporary dance artists set strong impulses through integration and linking with other artistic disciplines. Choreography and performance have great potential for the future of art due to their liveliness, momentariness and presence, and are also a reflector and impulse generator for social developments. Interdisciplinary cooperation with the visual and applied arts as well as with contemporary music is important for gaining new perspectives. Bert Gstettner is very concerned about this interdisciplinary approach and the increased presence of dance/performance/choreography on the stages, but also in other art spaces or museums. The promotion and production of contemporary dance and performance in relation to a changing society is essential for a positive future.
